De Montfort University is hosting an important event on Monday 19th May, 2025, to bring together police professionals and academic researchers across the East Midlands and beyond to boost research activity and impact. The event will be structured around facilitated by Dave Hill of Jumpthink to encourage co-production of ideas.
DMU’s Policy Unit, led by Dr Ahmad Al-Hiari, has organised a Sandpit to enable active participation, honest dialogue and the development of concrete next steps that can be implemented within current resource constraints. The outcome of the event will be to identify specific policing priority areas for sustainable academic input even where resources and budgets are limited.
New ways for changing times
There is a need to develop more responsive models for police academic collaboration by working together to create frameworks that allow research to be mobilized at the pace required by policing. This includes identifying specific mechanisms for rapid knowledge exchange, establishing clear communication channels, and developing streamlined processes for initiating collaborative projects.
Better pathways are now needed for translating research into practice, where research insights can be applied practically and demonstrate return on investment. The event will explore how creative solutions can ensure the long-term future sustainability of police-academic collaboration.
