The East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) is offering an exciting opportunity for up to 11 people on Year in Industry (YII) placements to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment for a minimum of 10 months within the 2023/24 academic year. All about EMSOU

EMSOU focuses on intelligence gathering and finding innovative ways to disrupt and investigate serious and organised crime, homicide and terrorism, on behalf of the five East Midlands police forces, being a national leader in the provision of forensic services for the region.

EMSOU’s expertise and specialist capabilities are drawn upon by the five regional forces to tackle people, drugs and firearms trafficking, cyber crime, fraud and money laundering, prison corruption, murder and other serious assaults and violent extremism.

EMSOU are looking for people with an inquisitive mind-set, a positive attitude to problem solving and learning new skills, and the ability to apply new knowledge and experience across a range of challenges. Internships on offer are varied, across technical, operational and support roles.

Due to the nature of the work, strict residency and security conditions must be met before an internship is granted. Candidates will need five years continuous residency in the UK and will be subject to vetting prior to a firm offer being made.

Please know, however, that security conditions may mean that certain roles, duties or tasks cannot be undertaken remotely. Where it is supported, home working environments may be subject to an operational security assessment.

What’s on offer

Intern placements are offered in the following areas:

Communications

As an EMSOU Communications intern you will be expected to work well as part of a small team. You will have strong writing skills, with the ability to adapt your work to suit the target audience, and be adept in the use of social media, particularly Twitter. Ideally, although not essential, you will also have a basic understanding of media law, as well as some experience with digital cameras, and design and editing software, such as Microsoft Publisher, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

Cyber Crime – Investigations and Protect

You can expect to work as part of a small Cyber Crime Unit in support of investigations and protective activity in support of the National Cyber Crime Strategy. Operations are focus on organised crime groups, individuals and networks involved in committing cyber crime, principally network attacks and ransomware offences. ‘Protect’ activity is focused on providing cyber security advice to individuals and businesses. The candidate will be working alongside Protect staff, investigators and technical specialists, and support them to understand the offence and how it was committed, identify Protect advice to reduce vulnerability, analyse the data and support investigations.

Cyber Crime – Online

The candidate will be working with Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Investigation teams, supporting investigators and technical teams with their aims of identifying criminals that operate online, while safeguarding vulnerable people. Some technical knowledge is an advantage but not essential, as focus will be on investigation administration and helping to improve the quality of investigations within this specialist department.

Staff working in this area are routinely exposed to content and imagery of an extreme and distressing nature. Data Science

In this area you can expect to work as part of a small data science team within law enforcement, aiming to deliver tools and solutions to colleagues across multiple disciplines, including organised crime investigation, intelligence analysis, business analysis and cyber crime. As such, the candidate will be expected to use a range of tools, from Excel to SQL, Python and R programming languages. The role will help deliver data insights across the organisation and will require an ability to adapt to and assimilate new technologies within your approach to data science.

Digital Forensics

As part of our Digital Forensics team, you will support the range of investigations undertaken across the organisation. You will be working alongside Digital Forensic Technicians and Digital Forensic Specialists to extract and analyse digital evidence, adhering to forensic principles, regulations and accreditation standards. A good understanding of digital technology is essential, as is a methodical approach to problem solving, with strong attention to detail.

Finance

You can expect to work as part of a wider Finance team providing a professional and collaborative service across EMSOU and other national projects. As part of the team, you will ensure that business objectives are met by supporting the work of the Finance Operations Manager, Finance Operations Assistants, and Assistant Business Accountant. You will gain invaluable real-world experience of working on public sector finances, helping to deliver financial plans and supporting future budget planning.

Forensic Imaging

As part of our Forensic Imaging team, you will support the range of investigations undertaken across the organisation. You will be working alongside Forensic Imaging Specialists, who generate court-ready digital presentations of complex and distressing evidence, as well as digital crime scene reconstructions. You will need a good understanding of forensic processes as well as an interest in digital photography and post-processing of images and videos or scene capture and 2D / 3D computer graphics.

Human Resources

You can expect to work as part of a wider HR team, providing a professional and collaborative HR service within EMSOU, ensuring that business objectives are achieved by providing an effective, proactive and efficient service. HR works to maintain a productive, effective and contented workforce, support managers in their supervision of staff, as well as plan and deliver strategic change, work on HR projects, such as in wellbeing and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Radio Frequency Propagation

Working as part of our Radio Frequency team you will support the range of investigations undertaken across the organisation. You will be working alongside Radio Frequency Specialists who undertake physical surveys and produce RF and Cell Site evidential packages for court. You will need a good understanding of the physics of Radio Frequencies, as well as RF engineering principles, such as cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and other communication technologies. An understanding or willingness to learn and apply forensic science standards would also be beneficial.

Research and Development – Information Technology and Cyber Security

You can expect to work as part of a digital technical development team, both applying and developing tools, techniques and procedures. As such, you will be expected to use a range of tools and software that relate to computer IT architecture security and assessment, malware analysis and other related disciplines. The role will require the ability to comply with set objectives and user requirements and apply research methodology to solve technical problems.

Research and Development – Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing

Working alongside members of our technical teams, you will be researching, developing and manufacturing mechanical and electronic solutions to problems. You should have a good understanding of design principles to meet objectives and user requirements, as well as understand relevant industry regulations and guidance. You will have practical aptitude and be able to work as part of a team to design, develop and build solutions to unique and complex problems.
